Rock N Roll - We All Got Too Precious!
Despite my way too busy schedule I've managed to fit in some time in the
studio over the last month or so - recording demos for my next album - and
in the process I've come to a new realisation: Sometimes we can get just way
too precious!
The fact that these tracks are 'only demos' may have freed up my
thinking a little but the truth is, though presented with enough technology to
make a concrete mixer sound like a symphony orchestra, I've come to the
conclusion that 99% of all this stuff is completely unnecessary. In fact I
like it when my stuff sounds a little gnarly and strange. It turns out I like the
results of these 'rough and ready' sessions so much that a lot of this
material is likely to end up in the final versions of these tracks.
So let's forget about
getting everything note perfect and technically correct. Let's just make
some rock n roll. Let's allow room echoes, duff notes and unexpected
distortions to wreak their merry havoc. So what if the guitar is flat or the
drums sound like a maniac beating on a box. Let's stop trying to be plastic
perfect and instead let's allow all our nasty bits to proudly hang out.
After all this is a simple
man's game! The point is we're creating an impression, expressing a
feeling, capturing a spirit! This is our one and only higher aim! Let's stop
mystifying and deifying all this crap and call it what it is: A bunch of
lunatics making a happy noise! That's all it is! Let's live with it and
love it!
From now on let's just plug in, turn on, and push record!
